It is a white and black tone.
The tone expresses a sense of loneliness because there are no bright or vivid colors.

 INTERPRETATION AND EVALUATION

-What is the mood of the drawing?

The drawing shows a sense of loneliness because white and black colors are constructing a boring mood, and empty background shows the nude is alone. Moreover, it shows a sense of imaginative because the empty background let viewers think about the relation between the nude and the background. And viewers can think about what can be added if they are the artist.

-What does the drawing express?

The drawing shows a nude, as the drawing title” standing nude”, the artist uses lines to create an ambiguous contour of the body.
Also, the drawing needs viewers to be careful and imagine the structure of the body because the contour is ambiguous and unclear, viewers can have different ideas because everyone’s mind is not same.
Moreover, the drawing expresses a sense of loneliness. Colors and tone are expressing the lonely and boring feeling. Although I can’t see the face of the nude, I can feel her loneliness by the structure. The nude is only showing her back and she is alone because the background is blank, gloomy tone gives me a sense of disappointed or lonely.
Lastly, it expresses a sense of casual. Lines are irregular and rough, just like a casual drawing and without planning.

In your opinion, why is this work interesting/moving/clever/imaginative/thought-provoking/......?Choose the adjective(s)that best fit the work, and then justify your conclusion in terms of specific features and qualities of the drawing.

One of the specific features of the drawing is imaginative because the empty space let viewers to imagine what it should have and the relation between the nude and background. Also, there are not any obvious contour lines to depict the outline of the nude, so viewers need imagination to organize and combine all the lines together to see how the nude is. And we can’t see the face of the nude, we can’t know the feeling of the nude, we only can through the use of tone, shape and space to feel what the artist want to express.
Furthermore, it is expressive. The gloomy tone and black lines express the loneliness of the picture. And irregular and rough lines show a sense of casual and informal.

  1. Hi I am Alison Chung,
Actually I share the same view as your which i think that this drawing do arouse my further imagination.
Artist drew the back of the figure that make me think of 'leaving' ad 'lonelines'. Also the monotone is equal to 'emptiness' for me in this case.
    Good work at all!

  3. Hello, Iam Teresa Lam.
The lines in this picture is very loose and thin and the artist doesn't give a very detailed lines to the woman, which makes the woman looks unclear. However, the lines have showed the movement of the body and also showed the body texture of the woman.

  4. Hi, this is Nina. I think the rhythm is qiute important in this picture since rhythm is created by something repeated. And in this picture, the artist repeats different types of lines, soft and rough, to form the nude female body and to create a sense of movement.

  6. Hi, I am Kelvin.
I think the line is so rough and don't have the same direction. The body of the women seems not clear and I agree Ashley that the woman is moving.

  7. Hi,this is Cat Wong.
I think the artist used the lines to create sense of movement. However, it is quiet special that the artist used less of curve lines to depict the human movement.

  8. Hi, this is Molly.

I think you made a good point about how lines are used in an irregular way to show the contours of the body. When I first saw this drawing I thought that it didn't use line but I was just thinking of line in terms of outlines, and not how line can be used as a sort of texture and to show shading.

  10. Noria: It is a very interesting picture, the lines are very strong and energetic. I think the place in the picture is windy, so the woman's hair come up striaght.

  13. Hi, this is Filia.
Love this picture because it's simple, only with different thick of lines creat a back shape of a lady, not really clear but impressive. The lines is quite rough whick makes the lady more engergetic just like she's moving.
And i think the mood of this picture is full of joyful and happiness base on the posture and the face of the shy lady which seems smiling.

  14. Hi, this is Lewina. The texture of lines in this drawing are rough and short. It seems like the artist just capture an object and have a quick draw on it as sketch. From the rhythm of lines, the girls in the drawing seems like moving around and the whole picture provide me a sense of peaceful and relax.

  15. This is Stacie!
The point about the loneiness of the figure and its relationship with the space is interesting. I think the rough texture of the figure may suggests violence or torture towards women. You may develope the point about the sense of loneiness further with the sense of torturing.

  16. Hi, I am Joyce Ma, I think this sketch is kinda like the picture of my drawing analysis. Both of them are about the back of a female. But this drawing has lots of pencil strokes to show the body of this woman.

  17. Hi, this is Cici. I think this drawing is quite special that it uses almost straight lines to creat the sense of movement. And it also shows a sense of lonelyness that we can see that the woman is crossing(or holding) her arms in front of her chest in order to protect herself. In addition, it also seems that she is standing in the wind because we can imagine her hair and her dress... So I disagree with you that the woman is nude. I think she might has a dress. What do you think?
