We can hardly see the shaped line in this drawing. The line is soft and unclear in order to make the character looks more mysterious.

atmospThere is one color tone(black to white). The tone is black in one-sided generally in order to creat a dismal here.

It is a three-dimensional form since we can the giant has height and depth through the drawing tenique. That can make the object looks more believable(like a real person).

Rhythm is not much important in this drawing since the giant is the focus in this picture. However ,the regular lines below the picture can enhance the sad feeling behind the giant .

The picture is not balanced .The picture was used in"triangle drawing structure".

Yes, down-to-up perspective was used in this drawing . The aritist used low-angled tenique to draw the giant in order to make objective looks more big and broaden the contrast between the giant and the small houses.

The picture is harmonious in the whole feeling . The artist use the tone of the color(one color tone) and the line(smooth line) to create a harmonious atmosphere .

The only strong contrast in the picture is the the size of the objects. We can see the main object(the giant) and the remained objects(the houses) have big contrast in size . Of course , it can let the audiences focus on the giant when they first cantch a glimpse of the picture .

INTERPRETATION AND EVALUATION

-What is the mood of the drawing?Justify your answer using information from your responses above.
The mood is sad ,sorrowful ,dejected and depressed.
The artist only use black and white to draw the picture . And we can see that the whole tone is black in general. Aspecially , the artist use shadow to describe the back of the giant's body ,making the atmosphere become sorrowful deeply and enhancing the lonelyness of the giant. And the artist chose to draw night scene of the background enhancing the sad feeling .

Moreover , The line is smooth instead of sharping in the drawing . We can see the shape of the giant is very soft which creates a meek personality of him .

-What does the drawing express?Justify your answer using information from your responses above.
The drawing expesses the artist's inner world .
First , in the sense of the facial expression . The giant looks at the sky and opens his mouth. It seems that something weighing on the giant mind and telling us that "Although i am a giant , i am fragile and lonely ."
Also , we can see the giant is nude .The artist did not draw clothes to him in order to let the audience focus on his face .
Besides , the artist use down-to-up perspective to draw the giant making the size looks bigger .The giant is big in size ,however ,he does not look like evil and wicked because of his facial expression .

In your opinion, why is this work interesting/moving/clever/imaginative/thought-provoking/......?Choose the adjective(s)that best fit the work, and then justify your conclusion in terms of specific features and qualities of the drawing.
In my opinion , the best adjective that fit the work is lonelyness.
When I first saw the drawing , I think the man looks big but he look small in his heart . Then I chose this picture . The whole structure of the drawing is simple . It does not contain much color and objects .It is simple but meaningful . Because when you looks at the picture for a long time , you will feel the lonelyness of the giant aspecially when you looks at night .

It seems that there is a touching story behind the scenes . Maybe the giant is a description of the artist himself showing the lonelyness and sorrow of his inner world. I really want to add a dialogue at the bottom of the drawing writing that "Looking at the same sky as you but have you even missed me?"

  1. Eason: There are much fantansy in the picture because of the way of the giant's eye line. The picture becomes interesting. We don't know what is he looking at, but we can imagine what is he looking at. The space in the picture becomes bigger which break the limitation of the frame of the picture, and extends to the space where is out of the frame of the picture.

  2. Hi, I am Joyce Ma. I agree with you that the artist expresses his inner feeling in this drawing, and I could also feel the isolation and loninessin this drawing.
And for the brush stroke, it is not precise in this drawing, and the figure in this drawing is quite blur, I guess the artist is under a mental condition of pressure/ stress, because he used very dark color in this drawing.

  3. Hello Yota, I am Clio. Yes, i agree that the picture expresses a kind of sad feeling for audiences, but it expresses other feelings as well such as loney and being isolated. It seems that he cannot fall into sleep because he wants to solve some problems but there is no one can help him. In addition, i think the picture is harmonious because it is midnight and the environment is so quiet and peaceful.

  4. Hi, this is Nina. I think the drawing is imaginative since it depicts the imagination of the artist. Gloomy and dim are the general mood of the drawing in order to create the sense of mysterious and horrible. About the strong contrast in this drawing, I think not only the size, but also the obvious light and dark cotrast.

  5. Noria: I think the down-to-up perspective of this drawing is meaningful. Audience seems to be smaller and observing the man sit in front of them. In my point of view, the artist really want to help the person in the picture or it is representing hiself but he think of his inability. He felt depress about the undercontrol fate, so he drew a big sky over the man with black color.

  6. Hi, this is Filia. The mood of this picture is very lonely, sad and hopeless. As the main colour used is black, the backgroud is at night with really dark sky and we only can find a back of a man. Also, his posture seems telling us he is pondering something and full of annoyance.

  7. Music:This painting is very touching because the giant seems lonely, and the dark color increased this feeling. The body is very strong, the painter used dark and light to imply muscles. The surreal location makes this painting a little romantic.

  11. Hi, this is Cat Wong. The man is so lonely and sadness because of the tone and the light effect. Although the drawing is really darkness, the human body is still quiet clear and used the curve lines to create sense of movement.

  12. Hi, this is Molly. I think that you could maybe say more about tone and contrast. I think that the use of changing tones instead of clear outlines to show the shapes and forms in this drawing is very important. Also I would say that although this picture is overall very dark, it does use some extreme contrast in certain areas for example the light on the figures back. Also if you look at the very top and very bottom of the picture there is a very strong contrast.

  13. Hi!!Yota!!
    I am Conroy.
The expression in this drawing is very strong. The mood is so stressful. It maybe influence by the environmental situation. It depicts a man siting at night. Somehow, the painter made use of the evironment to present the mood of sadness.

  14. Hi, i am vivian,
yes i think this drawing expresses loniness,
and the mood is very well created.
However, i think to focus that the painter is trying to make is the muscular body of the man, should it be? but by the way, it is quite a ice drawing.

  15. Hi,i am millie.
I agree that the picture is harmonious. Apart from the use of color tone and line, I think
the artist also use the moon (on the right upper
coner) to provide a harmonious mood.
Besides, i feel a sense of loneliness at the same time!

  18. Hi this is Cici. I also feel the lonelyness the first time when I see it. I think it may due to the back of the figure. The man is thinking and just leave the viewers his muscular back. And the shade also contribute the same feeling.
However, I have a little question. You said that "The picture is not balanced .The picture was used in"triangle drawing structure".
Then what do you mean by triangle drawing structure" in this drawing? And why is it not balanced?

  19. Hi, i am Tracy.
    I love your drawing!
it is very dramatic since there are quite a big contract between the tone.
And it lets me to feel that, the man is very strong due to the texture of the body!
And i do agree that the drawing shows the inner heart of the artist.when looking at his post, i can feel he is lonely and sad. It is a very expressive drawing!

  20. Hi, this is Lewina. This drawing is cool and I love it very much. This tone in this drawing is quite dark, it seems that the artist is in a sadly mood and feel lonely. The expression is very strong and I can really understand it through the drawing. In addition, the lines are quite ambiguous, but I think there is a great match with the mid-night situation as everything in a dark condition may not appear clearly.

"Looking at the same sky as you but have you even missed me?"hahha~~~Well said!

I'm just wondering if the small arch shape at the right top corner is the moon. If yes, it seems to underscore the poetic effect and the loneness of the picture.

  22. Alison Chung speaking:)
I find this drawing interesting too. Although there are only black and white but i never feel it boring because the artist used a lot shading to enrich details and content.

Also it is impressive to depict such a tough man in a poetic way, contrasting but nice. I do agree that this drawing gives me a sense of harmonious since that big man has a warm heart!
