1) INTRODUCE THE DRAWING IN GENERAL TERMS
Title of the drawing "NobleNobsonCentral1998-99"
Name of the artist Paul Noble
Year the drawing was done 1999
Medium Pencil drawings on paper
•Subject matter /general theme of the work It is overview of a imagine city, the city is a bit of empty. It seems every house is not complete, holes and tiling are everywhere.
•Purpose of the drawing The devastated interior of town was created from Noble's invention, it really could be the brainchild of a mini dictator with a fancy for Milton Keynes and Mogul architecture. Or maybe it is a record of the cross between Chechnya, Kosovo and other bombed out cities. Noble seems to posit the artist as a perverse godhead, and suggests that excessive control invariably leads to fascism, torture and death.
2) DESCRIBE THE DRAWING IN DETAIL
•Line used Every line are very precise and thin that made by pencil, it generally used straight line to outline the building's structure. Some intermittent and tight line was drawn to represent the broken tiling. Some smeared, soft and irregular line to represent the ground of the city. Some fluid and feathery line to represent the water tank. Also, drawn dots to represent sand or soil.
•Tone used The tone of this picture is resentful and cynical. We can't find out any living things in this town.Partially destroyed buildings, concrete shard, broken window, cracked wall and bomb crater were singularity limned. The irregular infrastructure give us a sence of hopeless and intense anger.
The source of light is at the corner of left hand side. It representing twilight , like the eniviornment will merge into total darkness. That express finally brought the war to an end.
• Shape and/or form in this picture It is very easy to recognise that is the shape of buildings, all of the buildings seems to be at the same height and they are connect with each others tightly.
Lines linking to structure the length, width and depth, also the lighting effect give us a senceof depth. Three- dimensional buildings are presented.
•Texture The texture of the buildings seems to be smooth, they have glossy face which represent part of it is face to the light and a dull back. The edge of the buildings are sharp. Also, it makes people feel that some of the walls are very hard and strong, but some of them are risping and showing cracks. The ground seems to be more soft than buildings. Lastly, the centre landmark feel like make of metal, the surface is a bit of shiny.
•The composition of the drawing The overall arrangment of this picture is very balance. Land mark is placed at the central, buildings around the landmark is organize as a shape of nearly a circle. Then the others buildings ramdomly placed the rest of the space. If we have a very far away quick look, the picture seems to be quite harmony because of the pattern arrangement.
•Rhythm When we step outward to have a look at the overview of this picture, you will have no idea to focus on one particular building. That means it did not include a distinct focus building. But, we would rather focus on the landmark which stand at the central of the town.
•Balanced It is balanced. All things are place full of the whole picture. •Perspective used The whole picture show us a bird's-eye view of the hostile environment.
•Harmonious When we look more deeper of the picture, it is not really harmonious. Partially destroyed buildings, concrete shard, broken window, cracked wall and bomb crater were singularity limned.
•Contrasts There are strong contrasts in the picture. It use white and dark to represent the three dimensional space.

3) INTERPRETATION AND EVALUATION
•Mood of the drawing The hostile environment make us feel like agitated and Soothed. Agitated feeling comes from there have no complete building left, horrible atmosphere penetrate every corner of this composition. Also, because of the tone of the colour is black and white, high contrast, no moving things, all things seems to be stable. These elements add up with a sense of sooth, feeling that the horrible action had passed away , all the things become stable and feeling of hopes in the future.
You may think these two adjective is a bit of contradiction. This is my feeling after analyse the composition precisely. And also I think the artist want to present his complex feeling, the past experience make him feel uncomfortable, he want to end up this feeling, so he try to soothe his past wound but he did not know he will success or not, this is what he wish.
•Expression The drawing express an empty city with hopeness now, after a long period of time across the darkness, it will get well soon. We can find out the source of light is at the corner of left hand side. It representing nightfall, then I predict after a long long night, everythings will be fine.
Hey this is Sarah. When you wrote about mood, you said that this drawing makes you feel both agitated and soothed. These two adjectives are totally the opposite of each other so I was wondering how you can get such different emotions from this drawing. Do you think you could elaborate on that?
ReplyDeleteHi, I am Joyce Ma. I agree with you that the lines in this drawing are very precise and thin. And I found that curve lines are hardly seen in this drawing. The artist wants to express a feeling of solitude.
ReplyDeleteThe artist chooses to use light color to draw the tone and contrast. It gives me a feeling that the artist want to express a feeling of this place, but he is not very close with it, because if one person is very close or have a relationship to one place, he would use a darker color to express his somber feeling.
Hi, I am Clio. I can see the drawing is equilly divided into 4 similar parts which is very balance. The similar parts create a static and solid feeling to us.
ReplyDeleteHi, this is Nina. As you mentioned that 'the drawing express an empty city with hopeness', I think it would be more clear and persuasive if you can justify your answers by using information from your response above.
ReplyDeleteNoria: Thank you all of your comments, I have make some adjustment and elaborate more detail:)

ReplyDeleteThis painting looks like a blueprint of a city more than a pure artwork. All the houses are similar and simple. We can see there is some trace of using ruler to make the line straight. Somehow, I feel wasted when looking at it.
Hi! I am Ashley Leung.I think some of the line in the picture is not very clear. The color of the building merge with the blackground.
ReplyDeleteI'm Alison Chau. I think this is an interesting work. At first, I cannot find any focus in the picture. Then, I try to follow the path and look at the details carefully. So I think this work can attract the audience to appreciate it attentively.
ReplyDeleteHi, this is Molly. You wrote some about the texture used to create the individual buildings, but I wonder what more could be said about the overall texture of the whole piece. It seems to me that when all of the small parts (the buildings) come together it creates a strong visual texture across the whole composition.
ReplyDeleteHi im Millie!
ReplyDeleteI would say the content is very full.
I also choose Noble Paul's artwork to analyze.
And I recognize that Paul prefer uses cube buildings and some straigh lines to present his work.
