ZHANG Wenxi (Cici) talks on Fever Few by Michael Landy

1)   INTRODUCE THE DRAWING IN GENERAL TERMS
•What is the title of the drawing?
Fever Few

•What is the name of the artist?
Michael Landy

•What is the year the drawing was done?
2002

•What is the medium? (ie the materials used to produce the picture, for example charcoal on paper, pen and ink etc)
etching on paper

•What is the subject matter or general theme of the work? (eg is it a figure drawing, a map, a portrait, an autobiographical work, a picture about nature, a drawing of the city etc?)
It is a picture about a kind of weed (fever few) in a very realistic way.

•What is the purpose of the drawing? (eg Is it a diagram that explains how something works? Does it record accurately record the appearance of something? Does it express the artist's emotion or memory? )
The purpose of it is to render in the traditional style of botanical draughtsmanship.

2)   DESCRIBE THE DRAWING IN DETAIL
•How is line used? What does it do/express?
The lines are very carefully depicted which "systematically record every twist of root, bristle on stem and capillary hair on leaf.
Some information online shows that the drawing seems to encourage 2 types of viewing."From a distance of a few feet, appreciating the overall shape of the grey masses against the paper, and taking in the structure of the weed, from flower to root; and from a few inches, marveling at the extraordinary level of details. When the view changes, you will find a big surprise of those amazing details."

•How is tone used? What does it do/express?
Although the drawing is monochrome, it still gives the viewer a feeling of live and strength. The roots are long and powerful, flowers are also trying their best to reach the sunlight. We can easily feel that this plant is absolutely fresh and strong.

•What can you say about shape and/or form in this picture? What is the effect?
"In a final and surely conscious twist, the artist uprooted the weeds so as to idealize and depict them, keeping them alive as best he could over the many days it took to etch them in such detail. Yet the weeds seem to float against the pure white of the paper as though they were rising, their roots trailing in the air. So these colourless weeds take on a ghostly or spiritual air, and the lethal act of representation, of making beautiful and eternal is a price paid for with life itself."

•Is texture a feature of the drawing?
"From a distance, certainly, it has a conventional aesthetic appeal but closer up it contains a subtle surprise as, despite the abstracting force of monochrome and uniform lines on paper, the collection of bristles, thorns and wilting leaves hints not at aesthetic order but at the weed’s defence, grubbiness and decay."

•What can you say about the composition of the drawing? What is the effect of this type of composition on the overall drawing?
The drawing seems very simple but focused. There is only a single weed in the paper. And this composition makes people put emphases on the observation of this plant, which gives people a very good chance to appreciate it very carefully.

•Is rhythm important in this picture? If so, say more about it...
No. I think there is no certain rhythm in this picture. The picture is so realistic.

•Is the picture balanced? Explain...
Yes, the picture is quite balanced. The weed “stands” in the middle of the white paper. And every part of the plant spreads very equally, which makes people feel balanced and harmonious.

•Is perspective used in the picture? If so, describe the way that the illusion of three-dimensional space has been created.
I think there is no perspective used in this picture. This is no light, no shade, it is very 2D.

•Is the picture harmonious? If so, in what way?
Yes. This picture is very harmonious. It has a very conventional aesthetic appeal. Every line, every detail makes this drawing harmonious.

•Are there any strong contrasts in the picture? Say more...
I think the only contrast in this picture is color. Also, from different distances, you will have different feelings. From a far distance, it is only a plant but for closer-up, you will be amazed at those sophisticated details.

3)   INTERPRETATION AND EVALUATION
•What is the mood of the drawing? Justify your answer using information from your responses above
I think the mood is peaceful and vital. The color of the drawing is black and white. Every single detail of the feverfew is carefully depicted. The composition of this drawing also contributes a mood of peaceful.

•What does the drawing express? Justify your answer using information from your responses above
As I said before, the purpose of it is to render in the traditional style of botanical draughtsmanship. The artist just wants to bring the viewers back to nature. He used old method to make a series of this kind of picture, which also took his big amount of time on them. A constant strand in this artist’s work is just that single-minded and uncompromising focus on what he undertakes. These works made him poring over plants and the etching plates for months, and for as long as the daylight held out (twelve hours a day, he says, in the summer). What the artist wants to express is that “weeds are not just weeds”. He uses his hard work to remind people of these weeds’ names, neglected histories, supposed medicinal qualities and the meanings that people used to attach to them.
For Landy, weeds are not just weeds!

•In your opinion, why is this work interesting/moving/ clever/ imaginative/thought-provoking/......?  Choose the adjective(s) that best fit(s) the work, and then justify your conclusion in terms of specific features and qualities of the drawing.
I think the work is powerful.
This drawing seems very simple, which is just a little weed, and it even makes people feel it’s weak. But the series of this similar etching contains artist’s hard work. Although the picture is black and white, you can still feel the green of the leaves, the yellow of the flowers and the strength of the root and the stem. The weak weed makes viewers feel the nature, feel energetic, feel strength… that is exactly what I think the power of this picture.

  3. Hello, i'm Filia Wong.
A quite special picture, mainly focus the lines.
It shows a full view of a plant especially the rootstalk which we are rarely can see.
Everything in the picture is really detail and real, it seems doing a record.

  4. Hi, I'm Music.
This painting is a little bit scientific, and very sophisticated. There's a lot of details to talk about, and the lines I think are clear and reminds me of the traditional skills.

  5. Hi. This is Fanny. From my point of view, there is strong contrast between the root and the branches in terms of the thickness. The root is more thin with soft line and represents the weak feeling. However, the branches and stroke are dark in colour with strong line. You can mention more the contrast.

  7. Hi, I am Joyce Ma. I totally agree with you that this picture gives us "a feeling of live and strength", we could feel the the vital survival trace of this plant. And I have a question that if this is a picture of draughtsmanship, why this plant make me feel about the personal feeling of this artist that he is so tough and strong, just like the plant?

  8. Hi there. This is Yu. I agree that this drawing is very detailed and focus on the lines. And I have the same feeling with Clio that this picture give me a sense of weakness. I don't know if this related to the very light color tone?

  9. HI, this is Erica.
There are many space in the picture, I think the artist give audience a chance to imagine how the plant grow up. It will grow up bigger and bigger.
Also, we can see the lines depicted the leaves, roots and flowers are very detailed.

  10. Halo, I am Kelvin.
The first impression of this photo is that the plant is too weak. That's why the title of the photo called Fever Few. And this photo mainly focus on the line of the plant and it most of the line is a soft line.

  13. Hi, Im Teresa Lam.
    I agree with what Erica said. The whole picture has many spaces and very plane and provide a space for the plant;
I also think that the space is letting people who is seeing the picture, only focus to the plant and every detail part of the plant. Especially the roots, I can feel the movement and the energitic of the roots, seems like using its effort moving to the bottom to get the water

  14. Hi, this is Molly. I think it is interesting how some people thing this picture represents life/strength and others think it looks weak. Personally, I agree with Clio that the feel of this drawing is quite weak. I think this has to do with the delicate lines and the sense of isolation created by this blank composition where the plant is completely alone, without even the soil it needs to grow in.

  15. Hi Joyce, this is Cici. i think you are right. the roots are just like the insects' legs. And the roots also contribute a sense of rising feeling. Just I said in my article:"the weeds seem to float against the pure white of the paper as though they were rising, their roots trailing in the air."

  16. Eason: The work is a little bit like Chinese painting. The background of the picture is nothing but it makes the audience have more fantasy.

  17. I am Ashley Leung.
I think the line is very important in this picture. the structure of the roots and the leaces is decribed by the line very detail .

    ReplyDelete
  18. Noria: Lines used in here are thin and precise, we can see all the detail structure. Feeling of energetic present in this little and weak plant. I think the purpose of this picture is put in a biology book for people to distingish the species.

  19. Hi,this is niki. I think the line of this drawing is very fine and it recorded the sharp really real.also, I agree with u that the drawing give as a life feeling and it is strong that refer to its roots.

  20. Hi,this is Tina.
I think this picture is a kind of different syles.
One day I just saw a sentence said by a very famous composer, that I really agree .He said" Anything could be the way talk to the people, even could be without any instrument, water, stone, paper, anything but all these sounds is the language of your heart ,nothing related to the technique, that’s the future of the music ".This sentence I really agree. So I think no matter which art form , all are express a kind of feelings ,no matter the sad ,or the peaceful ,or the happiness.(from the youtube which is his video)
This picture gives peopel's feeling a kind of hard ,scitific feelings.
This picture seems like a scientific picture.Give me more peaceful .The line and composition can support this feelings and emotions.
I think the most technique the artist use is the line, these lines are more clealy and more details. For example, the roots are more details ,you can feel a kind of like a scientific sample.
And also ,from the composition perspective ,is more central ,the artists wants to highlight the objective in order to give a scientific and peaceful feelings.
I think if you can tell more details about the relatioship between the emotions ,that's will be much more better.

  22. Hi, Filia Wong, this is Cici.
The details about the root in this drawing shows us the sense that we cannot see in daily life. And it also shows the power of this little weed.

This drawing just use and very old method to creat the artwork, which is a traditional style of botanical draughtsmanship

  24. Hi Fanny, this is Cici.
Acturelly I think I don't agree with you. I think there is no big contrast between the root and branches. Instead, color is the only thing that I think has contrast.

Thank you for your kind reminding. I have already quoted it. Please check.

  26. Hi, Joyce, this is Cici.
    Good question!
Acturelly this picture is one of a series of similiar drawings of this artist---Landy. And it comes from one of Landy's exhibitions----Nourishment. And the exhibiton before Nourishment is called Break Down. Break Down was unseccessful at that time and Landy made no money from that one. So after suffering that such rough time, Landy had a new start----Nourishment. And this series of drawing easy to sell and Landy also didn't hide his intention for money. Finally, the result showed that he succeeded.

  27. Hi, Yu, this is Cici.
In my opinion, the main reason for the feeling of weakness is because of the structure of this drawing. Unlike other drawings, the artist didn't make the weed fill the whole paper. Instead, he left a lot of blank around the little week. In addition, it might also because of the image of this drawing. Fever Few is just a weed, a thin plant, but not the one with wide leaves and very big flowers. This kind of weed has small flowers, thin branches, long and thin roots and small leaves. It is very different from some plant we see in torrid areas.

  28. Hi, Erica, this is Cici.
Yes, I agree with you. The space in this picture gives viewers the space to imagine and the lines are really fantastic!

  29. Hi, Kelvin, this is Cici.
Haha~ I think you misunderstood the title. The title is just the name of this weed, but not mean any weekness.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi, Charlie, this is Cici.
Well, maybe everyone's idea can be very different and you will think that it is week. But I still think it is really powerful because the structure and the lines of this drawing show the life of this plant and it is really touching for me.

Yes, I also feel strange why people think so different about this picture. May be just because everyone has their different ideas of judging one thing. Never mind, it is interesting, isn't it?

  34. Hi, Eason, this is Cici.
    Interesting commment!
I agree with you that it does seems a bit chinese styel. I think it may because it is light and simple but not messy.

  35. Hi Noria, this is Cici.
I think you had a good guess, but unfortunely I have to tell you that the purpose of it is not like that. It's just and artwork shows in an exhibition. Some famous universities do buy them but they are just for appericate, but not for studying bioloby.
